Cool was I and logical. Keen, calculating, perspicacious, acute I was all of these. My brain was as powerful as a dynamo, precise as a chemist's scales, as penetrating as a scalpel. And think of it! I was only eighteen.
나는 냉정하고 논리적이다. 날카롭고 계산에 밝으며, 판단이 민첩하고 매사에 정확하며 빈틈이 없다. 두뇌는 다이너모처럼 파괴력이 강력하고 화학자의 저울처럼 정확하며 외과용 메스처럼 예리하다. 게다가 이 점을 알아야 한다! 난 겨우 18살이었던 것이다.

It is not often that one so young has such a giant intellect. Take, for example, Petey Bellows, my roommate at the University. Same age, same background, but dumb as an ox. A nice enough fellow, you understand, but nothing upstairs. Emotional type. Unstable. Impressionable. Worst of all, a faddist. Fads, I submit, are the very negation of reason. To be swept up in every new craze that comes along, to surrender oneself to idiocy just because everybody else is doing it this, to me, is the acme of mindlessness. Not, however, to Petey.
이렇게 젊은 사람이 이 만큼의 지적 능력을 보유하기란 흔한 일이 아니다. 내 대학 룸메이트인 페티 벨로우스를 예로 들어보자. 나와 나이도 같고 성장 배경도 같은데 그 친구는 미련하기가 황소와 같다. 물론 좋은 친구이긴 하다. 하지만 어깨 위의 2층은 텅 비어 있다고 할 수 있고, 감정에 좌우되는 기질인데다 정서가 불안정하고 감수성이 예민하다. 그 중에서 가장 고약한 점은 대책 없는 '유행의 추종자'라는 것이다. 나는 유행이야말로 이성의 정반대 개념이라고 생각한다. 시도때도 없이 불어닥치는 유행의 광풍에 매번 휩싸인다는 것, 단지 다른 사람들이 그짓을 한다는 이유 하나만으로 어리석은 행위를 따라간다는 것은 나한테는 비이성의 극치로 보인다. 물론 페티에게는 그렇게 보이지 않을 테지만.

One afternoon I found Petey lying on his bed with an expression of such distress on his face that I immediately diagnosed appendicitis.
어느 오후 나는 피티가 내가 척 봐도 맹장염이라고 진단내릴 정도로 고통스런 표정으로 침대에 누워있는 것을 발견했다.

"Don't move," I said, "Don't take a laxative. I'll get a doctor."
"움직이지 마." 내가 말했다. "변비약 먹지 마. 내가 의사를 데려올 테니."

"Raccoon," he mumbled thickly.
"너구리." 그는 죽어가는 목소리로 중얼거렸다.
