Part 1 - 2. THE PROCESS OF INNOVATION OF CJ
Part 1 - 2 - 1. The reason why Jeil-jedang separate from Samsung
The most important reason Jeil-jedang separated the company from Samsung in 1993 was related to Korean government’s policy at that time. Past president Kim Young-sam carried out policy, in which prominent conglomerates should focus on two or three fields of their business. By doing that, the government forced conglomerates not to expand in various fields. Under this policy, the main fields of Samsung were electricity, engineering, and chemistry so Jeil-jedang, who had produced flour and sugar, was classified as minor branch of their business. In this situation, the company needed to get out of this unfavorable condition so it finally detached from Samsung in 1993.
Part 1 - 2 - 2. About CEO Son Gyeong-sik and Lee Jae-hyeon
There are two CEOs in this section; Son Gyeong-sik and Lee Jae-hyeon and they show two different types of leadership. In fact, the two CEO affected the establishment of early CJ’s organizational structure and culture. First, the vice president of CJ, Son Gyeong-sik, is a person who always supports workers. His leadership style may be compared to iron hand in a velvet glove. This kind of leadership style played a role in making internal cohesion. For example, although he does not order his employees directly, he has the power to make employees work on their own for the purpose of setting an example. This is because he thought that it was a mandatory duty for CEO to gain employee’s absolute trust and form their inner mind. And CEOs need to achieve this by setting an example and having concern about subordinate’s matters. Also, he is kind of an introverted person so he would always prepare for matters related to management in advance. Restructuring before IMF in CJ can be an example of showing his leadership style. Right after becoming vice president of CJ, he stated to his plan to carry out restructuring gradually because he judged that Korea would be going through economic crisis within the following years so CJ needed to prepare for it. Thanks to his gradual restructuring, CJ could overcome economic crisis without major loss in the late 1990’s.
Another CEO, Lee Jae-hyeon at that time had a different kind of leadership style with Son Gyeong-sik. Briefly speaking, he is
