Elementary Rules of Usage
1. 영어 글쓰기의 기본 규칙들
1. ’를 붙여 소유격으로
마지막 자음이 무엇이든 ’ 를 붙임
Ex)Miry’s friend, Hyeongjun’s book
예외
-es나 -is로 끝나는 고대 고유명사, Jesus‘ 소유격,
conscience’와 righteousness’
Moses’ Laws, Isis’ temple 같은 형태는 흔히 다음과 같이 대체된다.
the laws of Moses
the temple of Isis
대명사 소유격
hers, its, theirs, yours, oneself 에는 필요 없음
1. ’를 붙여 소유격으로
대교 5학년 5단원
2. ‘Serial’ Comma 의 생략
세 개 이상 용어의 연속에서,
마지막 용어 앞에는 콤마를 생략
- red, white, and blue
- gold, silver, or copper
He opened the letter, read it, and made a note of its contents.
축약형 etc.는 비록 하나의 단어가 올지라도 항상 콤마가 따라온다.

* 계속적용법의 관계대명사는 콤마로 묶어줘야 한다.
(ex :The aduience , whice had at first been indifferent , becamemore and more instered.
* 장소와 시간을 나타내는 관계부사 where와 when 역시 같은 방식으로 구두점을 찍는다.
(ex : In 1769 , when Napoleon was born , Corsica had but recently been acquired by France.)
* 한정적 용법의 관계사절은 콤마로 분리하지 않는다.
(ex : The candidate who best meets these requirements will obtain the place.
3. 삽입구 전후에 콤마 넣기
삽입된 표현 앞에서 접속사가 오면 접속사 뒤가 아니라 앞에 첫 번째 콤마를 찍는다.
He saw us coming, and unaware that we had learned of his treachery, greeted us with a smile.
etc.와 jr.와 같은 약어는 문장 끝을 제외하고는 항상 앞뒤로 콤마를 찍어준다.
3. 삽입구 전후에 콤마 넣기
4. 등위절을 연결하는 등위접속사 and와 but 앞에는 콤마를 찍는다.
두 문장이 등위 접속사로 연결 될 때 - S+ V ~ , 접속사 S + V ~
1. The early records of the city have disappeared, and the story of its first years can no longer be reconstructed.
2. Owing to the disappearance of the early records of the city, the story of its first year can no longer be reconstructed.
1번이 조금 더 느슨한 형식, 독자가 편한함 느낌(부담 x)
