Ⅰ존 던의 일생
John Donne은 가장 유명한 영국의 형이상학파 시인이며 청중을 홀리는 유명한 설교를 하는 성직자였다. 그의 시는 위트와 진지함이 교묘하게 어우러져 있다. Donne (1572-1631)은 Anti-가톨릭 감정이 영국에서 거의 절정에 이르렀을 때 유서 깊은 로마 가톨릭 가문에서 태어났다. 1596년과 1597년 2회에 걸쳐 스페인 원정에 종군하였고 그 후 바로 25세의 나이에 국새상서 (國璽尙書)(*Lord Keeper of the Great Seal)인 Thomas Egerton경의 수석비서에 임명된다. 하지만 More와의 강렬한 사랑과 자식의 생산으로 경제적으로 정신적으로나 물질적으로 불우한 날들을 보내게 된다. 친구들의 도움으로 근근이 생계를 이어간다. 축복받지 못한 결혼생활은 그를 경제적으로도 그를 내내 괴롭혔고 그는 재능을 삭힐 길이 없이 울분에 찬 나날을 보냈을 것이다. "John Donne, Anne Donne, Undone."에서 그의 심정을 토로하고 있다. 그의 작품에는 궁정과 교회에서의 업적과 지위에 대한 강한 열망 즉 던의 사회적이고 직업적인 열망과 본성이 담겨 독자에게 특별한 매력을 불러일으킨다. 그러나 뿐만 아니라 사회적, 지위적인 상승에 대한 Donne의 노력을 넘어 보편적인 그의 예술과 영적 열망을 고려했다. 작품 감상 시 ‘textual, critical, and biographical 관점’에서 통합을 시도해야 한다.
Ⅱ 존 던의 시와 해석
Donne의 예술(시와 설교)은 그의 인격을 나타낸다 - self-advancing, anxious, unsatisfied . 역사의 중심은 던의 친구이자 출세욕 있는 동료 Ben Jonson(1572-1637)에서 시작된다. 또 그의 잘 알려진 Donne의 Anniversaries 응답에서 시작된다. In firAn The First Anniversary
에서 Donne는 그가 본 적도 없는 소녀 Elizabeth Drury를 장대한 지위에 올렸다. Jonson은 Donne의 Anniversaries는 신성모독과 불경으로 가득 차있다고 말했다. Jonson의 신성모독은 Donne의 시적자만의 종교적, 수사적 낭비에 대한 그의 불만을 나타낸다. 작품을 직접 살펴보면
