Cambridge Dictionary에 따르면 야망(Ambition)이라는 단어는 a strong wish to achieve something 또는 a strong wish to be successful, powerful, rich, etc.로 정의된다. 한국어로는 ‘크게 이루어 보겠다는 희망’으로써 정의되는 야망은 르네상스 시대 시인이자 사제였던 존 던 (John Donne 1572-1631)에게는 어떠한 가치로서 다루어 졌을까. 또한 그의 삶과 작품에서 그의 야망은 어떻게 나타났을까. 흔히 존 던의 야망에 대한 질문과 관련하여 비평가들의 의견은 다양하게 나뉘어 왔고, 그의 행적과 작품을 중심으로 많은 비평가들이 던의 야망에 관하여 분석을 해왔다. 그중 단연 돋보이는 비평가는 바로 John Carey이다. 캐리 이후 많은 비평가들의 입장이 캐리의 입장에 찬성하거나 반대하는 이분법적인 양상을 보여 왔는데, 그만큼 캐리의 비평이 존 던의 전기적 관점에 큰 영향을 미쳤다고 볼 수 있겠다.

Donne’s Apostasy : He betrayed his faith
던을 성인과도 같은 모습을 가진 인물로 묘사했던 Izaak Walton과 달리, Carey는 던은 배교와 야망이라는 두 가지 개념을 중심으로 던을 바라보고 있다. Carey에게 있어 던은 자신의 종교까지도 배반하는 배교자이며, 끝없는 입신을 추구하는 야망가로 그려진다. Carey는 존 던의 다루고 있는 자신의 저서 ‘John Donne, Life, Mind and Art’의 첫 장에서 던의 개종을 Apostasy, 즉 배교로 주장하며 다음과 같은 구절로써 던에 대한 저술을 시작한다.
첫 번째로 우리가 던에 관하여 기억해야 하는 점은 그가 카톨릭 이었다는 점이며, 두 번째는 그가 자신의 믿음을 배반했다는 사실이다.
The first thing to remember about Donne is the he was a Catholic; the second, that he betrayed his Faith. (Life, Mind and Art(1981); p1)
가톨릭 가정에서 태어났고 왕권이 종교를 지배하는 것에 항거하다가 순교한 토마스 모어 경의 자손이기도 했던 던 「다시 읽는 존던」, 최재헌, 2013, 경북대학교 출판부
은 가톨릭교도로서 생활했지만, 그 종교적 한계 때문에 링컨 법학원에서도 학위를 받지 못하였다. 캐리에게 있어 던의 개종은 자신의 신념을 배신한 것으로 받아들여진다. 실제로 가톨릭 신자였던 존 던은 1615년에 영국 국교회 사제로서 서품을 받게 되고, 설교가로서 이름을 떨치게 된다. 사실 우리 모두가 알고 있듯, 한 사람의 믿음과 신앙은 쉽게 바뀌는 것이 아님이 분명하다. 그렇다면 이전까지 가톨릭교도로서 살아왔던 던이 왜 자신의 종교를 영국 국교회로 바꾸게 되었을까? 이것과 관련하여 다양한 작품에 나타나는 던의 고뇌를 분석 한 후에 캐리는 이렇게 답변한다.
왜 던이 배교자가 되었는가? 이 질문에 대답하기 위해서 우리는 인간 동기의 원천을 파헤치는 것을 확실히 해야 할 것이다. 그러나 세 가지 가능한 이유가 제시될 수 있는데, 바로 그는 야망을 가진 사람이었고, 그는 명석한 사람이며, 그는 빠르게 반응하는 사람이었다는 것이다. …… 첫 번째는 그의 야망인데, … 이것(야망)은 그(존 던)가 로마 가톨릭을 버리도록 했을 뿐만 아니라, 당시 영국국왕과 교황 사이에서 누구에게 충성심을 바쳐야 할지 흔들리던 사람들 에게도 영향을 미쳤기 때문이다.
Why did Donne become an apostate? To answer that we should have to be confident that we could plumb the spring of human motivation. But three possible reasons suggest themselves: he was ambitious, he was an intellectual, and he was reacting, in a not uncommon way, …… first, his ambition. … we need to touch on it here because it prompted him not only to desert the Roman Church but to attack those of its members who were still wavering in their loyalty between the Pope and the English King. (Life, Mind and Art(1981); p17)
