순찰 경관이 의젓한 걸음걸이로 큰길을 가고 있었다. 좀 거드름을 피우는 것처럼 보이기도 했지만 일부러 그러는 것은 아니었다. 그저 습관일 뿐이었다. 사실 거드름을 피운다 해도 누가 봐 줄 사람도 없었다. 이제 겨우 밤 10시가 될까말까한 시간이었지만 눅눅한 바람이 사납게 불고 있어서 길거리를 다니는 사람은 거의 보이지 않았다.
경관은 익숙한 솜씨로 경찰봉을 빙빙 돌리면서 이따금 조심스럽게 길거리와 집들을 살폈다. 체격이 좋고 걸음걸이가 의젓한 이 경관은 시민의 치안을 지키는 경찰관의 훌륭한 모범이라고 할만한 생김새였다. 이 근방 사람들은 모두 일찍 자고 일찍 일어나는 분위기였다. 가끔 담배 가게나 밤새 문을 여는 노점 식당의 등불이 보이기도 했다. 그러나 회사 사무실 등은 대개 일찌감치 문을 닫은 상태였다.
경관은 거리 어느 곳에 이르자 갑자기 걸음을 늦추었다. 캄캄한 철물점 점포 앞에 한 사나이가 불을 붙이지 않은 담배를 물고 벽에 기대고 서 있었다.
경관이 다가가자 그 사나이가 얼른 먼저 말을 걸었다.
"별 일은 아닙니다."
그 사나이는 경관을 안심시키려는 듯 서둘러 말했다.
"전 지금 그저 친구를 기다리고 있을 뿐입니다. 이십 년 전에 한 약속이 있거든요. 좀 이상하게 들리죠? 거짓말인지 의심스럽다면 사정을 얘기하죠. 이십 년 전 바로 여기에는 음식점이 있었어요. 별명이 '빅 조우'였던 브레디가 경영하던 음식점 말입니다."
"오 년 전만 해도 이 자리에 있었죠."
경관이 말했다.
"그런데 오 년 전에 헐어버렸습니다."
