제 1 절 연구의 필요성 및 목적
21세기에 들어서 문화가 국가 이미지에서 차지하는 영향력은 점차 확장되고 있다. 최근 싸이(PSY)의 국제적 활동이 그 예시가 될 수 있다. 싸이는 우리나라 문화의 한 영역 중 한명의 대표로서 ‘대한민국’이라는 타이틀을 달고 전 세계적으로 활동하며 우리나라를 알렸다. 세계화가 국가적인 문제로 제기되면서부터 다양한 사람들이 우리나라를 세계에 알리기 위해 노력해왔지만, 이와 같이 단 시간 안에 우리나라를 세계적으로 알린 것은 유례없는 일이다. 세계가 상호작용할 수 있는 네트워크가 구축되면서, 많은 사람들이 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 문화, 다르게 말하면 콘텐츠가 국가의 이미지를 결정하는 데에 큰 역할을 하게 된 것이다.
