나를 포함한 최근 몇몇의 교육자들은 학교의 교육과정의 완전한 재편성을 살펴봐야 한다. 우리는 질문에 관한 중요의 부분, 인간 존재의 핵심에 대한 거짓의 이슈들을 주어야 한다. 하나의 가능성은 보살핌의 주제들, 자신을 위한 보호, 다른 사람들과의 친밀감, 낯선 사람들과 각 나라의 사람들, 자연과 비인간적인 문화들, 인간이 만든 세상, 그리고 생각을 위한 주제들을 주위로 한 교육과정을 조직할 수 있을 것이다.
우리는 교육적 계획안에서 보살핌의 풍부한 단어들을 사용할 수 있고, 보통 일반적 교실에서 보살핌의 주제들을 소개할 수 있다. 첫 번째로 보살핌의 주제의 가르침을 위한 이론적 근거를 간단하게 제시하고 그러한 주제를 선택하는 방법과 조직하는 방법을 제안할 것이고 마지막으로 나는 교수를 지지할 수 있는 구조들에 대해 말을 할 것이다.
Why Teach Caring?
학교 다니는 아동 사이에서 범죄가 발생하는 시기에는 전례가 없는 단계(level)였다. 유아들을 어떻게 보살펴야 하는지에 대한 조금의 지식만을 가지고 유아들을 돌봐줄 때, 사회와 그리고 학교들이 종종 물질적인 것들에 집중할 때는 아마도 우리가 진실로 우리의 유아들을 위해 보살피기 위해 해야 할 것과 보살핌을 그들에게 왜 가르쳐야 되는지에 대한 논쟁이 필요하지 않았다. 그러나 대부분의 많은 이성적인 사람들은 교육적 문제가 시험에서 점수들로 주로 구성되어 있는 것을 믿는다고 본다.
하지만 나의 첫 번째, 논점은 우리는 충분한 학문적 성취보다 우리의 교육적 노력들이 필요해야 한다. 두 번째, 우리는 유아들이 그들 자신이 보호되고 있는 것과 다른 이들을 위해서 보살핌을 배운다는 것을 생각하는 것을 제외하고는 유아들에게 조금의 성취도 이룰 수 없을 것이다.
학문적인 것과 인간적인 것, 두 가지가 우리의 교육과정 안의 보살핌의 주제들로 포함되어졌다. 첫 번째, 이러한 포함은 학생들의 문화적 능력을 확장할 수 있을 것이다.
두 번째, 보살핌의 주제들은 과목들의 기준을 연결시키도록 돕는다. 수학학습에서의 언어의 사용, 과학수업에서의 역사, 그리고 모든 과목에서의 미술과 음악수업은 학생들에게 그들의 학습의 전체의 느낌을 줄 수 있다.
세 번째, 보살핌의 주제들은 실존주의적인 질문에 대해 학생들과 과목들을 연결한다. 삶의 의미가 무엇인가? 신은 있는가? 나는 어떻게 살아야 하는가?
네 번째, 이러한 주제들을 공유하는 것은 1대1로 연결할 수 있다. 교사들이 보살핌의 주제에 대해 논의할 때, 그들이 아마도 그들의 학생들에게 진실한 사람이 될 수 있고, 그들에게 새로운 지식을 구성할 수 있도록 하는 것이 가능하다.
