Ⅰ. Introduction
Two years ago, a freshman who was missing after attending a welcoming meeting for the freshmen was found dead unfortunately. The reason of his death was ‘hypothermic shock’. It also happened that several seniors who were drunk heavily ganged up to beat freshmen to brain death. Like these cases, we can often see that college students have fatal accidents related to drinking at admission time every year. In a welcoming meeting for the freshmen and membership training, especially, many students have big and small accidents after binge drinking. On the streets at night, we can see many students who walk staggeringly, vomit, or even fall after overdrinking. It is even said that an ivory tower is getting poisoned by alcohol.
Most college students meet and enjoy alcohol after entering a college. They tend to show their liberty by drinking alcohol. The liberty comes from the fact that most students pass the difficult hurdle of the entrance examination, and the alcohol is one of the essential factors in welcoming parties, membership training and other events of various kinds. It may be true that drinking alcohol plays an important role to loosen psychological tension and promote friendship mutually among the group members. Socially, drinking is considered as the mediator to provide excitement and comfort in reception and social gathering, but sometimes college students got to have some problems due to indiscreet drinking. Those are intervention in accidents or violence, health problems, decrease of academic ability, and economic loss. Thus, it is a fact that the drinking culture of college students is getting worn out by heavy drinking through distorted welcoming parties or meeting between juniors and seniors.
We used to be interested in underage drinking. But underage could be freshmen or sophomore in U.S and that is directed to the college drinking. So we began to study mainly about the ‘college drinking’.
In the papers we read, collegiate drinking affects many things around the universities or colleges. It doesn’t influence not only students but also the communities or surroundings. Those influences include academic performance, and other accidents related to drinking. Also, this college drinking has possibility of linking to the drinking problem when they go out to the real world. The drinking habits which are formed when young, it would be continued when old.
Ⅱ. Drinking Problems in the Korean Universities
Wrong drinking behavior can have a demoralizing influence upon the university students in various factors.
i. Problem induced by drinking behavior
1. Economic Difficulties: 47% of university students have economic difficulties because of money spent to drink and 49% of them are losing out financially.
2. Loss of Academic Ability: Drinking reduces memory; intelligence and concentration which are necessary for studying. About half of students have academic troubles due to drinking. After drinking, some of them would be absent from class or be late.
3. Accident and Violence: Drink can induce a shame or insult and even cause beating to death. In addition, drink and drive and an illegal act related to drinking behavior are on the rise. Only few students have never experienced
