그러나 근본적인 결여가 유아 교육 과정 속에 존재하고 있다. 대부분의 교실에서 과학, 특히나 물리 과학은 다른 교육 과정의 분야처럼 동등하게 그 중요성이 대두되고 있지 않다. 너무 많은 교실들 속의 과학영역은 새 학기에 제공된 탁자 위의 몇 개의 조개 껍질과 나뭇잎들로만 구성되어 있으며, 여름방학이 시작될 때 먼지와 함께 처리된다. 대부분 유아 과학교육 과정은 식물과 동물 활동만을 거론한다. 이런 활동들이 물론 과학에 있어서 매우 중요하며 대부분 유아 교사들이 유아들에게 주제를 제공하여 수업으로 이끌기 무난하지만, 그것들은 전체의 교육과정에서 고려 해야 할 부분들 중의 너무나 한정된 영역일 뿐이다.

놀이와 함께 실험을 통한 학습법의 개척자인 Lucy Sprague Mitchell, Caroline Pratt, Harriet Johnson, John Dewey는 20세기 중반 전부터 어린 아이들에게 그들의 물리적 환경 안에서 물체들을 탐험해 보도록 격려하고 있다.
