1800년은 새 나라 미합중국 정부의 수도가 워싱턴으로 옮겨간 해로서, 이때의 미국 인구는 500만으로 기록되었다. 문물이 발달되고 생활의 여유가 생기면서 차차 문예작가가 나타났다. W.어빙은 부잣집 아들로 국내와 유럽 각지를 여행하며 재미나는 이야기를 모아 책을 냈다. 그의 여행기·설화집·전기 등 많은 책 가운데 초기 네덜란드 이민들의 생활을 적은 《뉴욕 역사》(1809), 설화집 《스케치북》(1820) 《워싱턴전(傳)》(1855) 등은 아직도 읽을 만하다. J.쿠퍼는 《모히칸족의 최후》(1826)를 비롯하여 개척지대 산야에서 백인과 아메리카인디언들이 겪는 모험 이야기 여러 권과 《항만 안내인》(1823)을 비롯한 해양소설 여러 권, 그리고 사회소설과 여행기 몇 권을 남겨 놓았는데 그 중에는 지금도 애독되는 것이 더러 있다.
