본문내용
물의 세기는 물속 Ca2+, Mg2+ 이온의 양을 이것에 대응하는 CaCO3의 ppm으로 환산하여 표시한다. 여기서 ppm 이란, 수용액의 경우에 쓰이는 것은 중량 100만분율로 예컨대 용액 1kg(106mg) 중에 포함되는 용질의 mg수로 나타낸다.
물의 세기 측정법은 Schwarzenbach에 의해 킬레이트 적정법 이 발표된 이후로 EDTA를 이용한 킬레이트 적정법을 사용하게 되었다. 킬레이트란 두 자리 이상의 리간드와 결합하는 화합물을 말하는데 이는 금속 이온을 포함하고 있는 시료 용액에 완충 용액을 가하여 일정한 pH로 조정한 다음 지시약과 킬레이트 표준액을 이용하여 적정하는 방법을 말한다.
EDTA는 ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid의 약자로 금속과 1:1 착화합물(chelate complex)를 형성한다.
Water hardness 는 보통 물 시료를 pH 10으로 완충시키고 EBT 지시약을 가한 후 EDTA 적정으로 측정한다.
