- 서비스 경제에서 체현된 일(embodied work) 본 발제문에서 본문의 용어들에 대해 다음과 같이 해석하는 것을 기본으로 했다.
Work<일>, Labour<노동>, Employee<노동자>, Employer<사용자>, Body<몸, 육체, 신체>, Embodiment<체현, 체화>, Desirable/Desiring<욕망되는/욕망하는>, Presentation<수여>, Performance<수행>, Practice<실천, 관행>, Identity<정체성>, Subject<주체>, Interactive<양방향의>, discourse/discursive<담론(적)>
은 서비스 노동, 체현노동(embodied labour), 사회적 정체성의 수행과 동일시됨. 서비스 경제에서 체현된 수행이라는 의미의 육체노동은 많은 직업들에 있어서 핵심 부분이며, 그것은 완전히 사무적인, 비체현적 활동을 하는 듯이 보이는 고등기술 일자리에서도 마찬가지임. 높은 지위와 낮은 지위에서 모두 몸과 감정은 중요함.
- 그러나 아직도 공업경제의 오랜 정신노동/근육노동 구분은 지위계층에 반영되어, 일반적으로 서비스를 제공하는 몸과 서비스 구매자 간에 가까운 접촉을 하는 일자리일수록 지위가 낮고 금전적 보상이 낮음.
노동하는 몸에서 욕망되는/욕망하는 몸으로
- 소비서비스 부문의 일은 대부분 고객, 구매자, 소비자와의 직접적 관계를 수반. 거래의 부분으로서 노동자들이 자기 자신을 판매하는 일.
- 노동자들의 육체적 수여와 수행은 양방향 서비스 일자리(interactive service jobs) 또는 ‘육체노동(body work)’에서 결정적으로 중요함. 나아가 여기에는 노동자들 자신의 육체적 수행뿐만 아니라 고객의 몸에 하는 일(치장, 쾌락, 훈련, 돌봄 등)도 포함.
- 이러한 육체노동의 두 측면 모두에서 사회적 관계는, 고용관계의 점점 더 중요한 부분이 되고 있는 섹슈얼리티, 쾌락, 욕망, 환상을 토대로 함. 고용과 해고, 적정한(acceptable) 작업장 수행, 노동자와 고객 간의 상호작용에서 사회적 특성(attributes)은 일의 형태를 특징짓고 그에 따라 다르게 보상받음.
- 육체노동의 상품화된 형태의 증대되는 중요성은 ‘생산의 사회적 관계’와 ‘(수적으로 늘고 있는)노동자 정체성의 사회적 구성’ 간의 결합을 수정해왔음(recast).
