1. Executive Summary (less than 1 page)
Only a couple of years before Cyworld used to be the most used SNS service in Korea. The invention of Cyworld came as a huge shock to most of us back then. However, the Cyworld’s great success didn’t last very long. Cyworld was reluctant to adapt to consumer’s new life style as quickly as the other SNS such as Facebook, and as the smart phone becomes the main device for using the SNS the old users of Cyworld moved to Facebook at a speed of blink.
As a result there is very small number of users remaining on Cyworld, and in the contrast, the Facebook has more than a billion users worldwide. However, are people really satisfied with the Facebook and other SNS? Our answer was absolutely No! Belonging to the generation of SNS, all of our team members are using the Facebook and we all had some complaints about Facebook. We began our research from here, why do people use the Facebook if they are not completely satisfied with it? Did they have the similar complaints about Cyworld when they were using it? If we could come up with some of the solutions for Cyworld, maybe, we could revive the Cyworld we thought.
With the objective defined as “Revival of Cyworld”, we began our research. We first conducted secondary research to find about current SNS market situation and to set the basic guideline for our primary research. Next we conducted four different types of primary researches, including Schema, laddering interview, project technique (story-telling), and focused group interview. The main purpose of these researches was to find out the inner motivations on using SNS generally, as well as the reasons for using the specific SNS. We also tried to find out what they liked and disliked about Cyworld in the past.
The schema was focused on finding out the important attributes of Facebook and Cyworld and how the each attribute is related with each other. Laddering interview, we used it so we could better understand the values that people think important. The project technique revealed some of the hidden factors that cause negative feeling toward Cyworld. Last by having FGI, we were able to find out what are people really want in SNS.
