The Supply Chain is the big picture of the operations of a company, reaching from its raw materials to its customers. Each material and final product has complex interrelationships among them. Efficient management of the supply chain significantly improves customer service and the image of the company. Nevertheless, many managers ignore the importance of this and fall into the pitfalls of poor management. We present the pitfalls of managing supply chain inventories and suggest possible solution to managers. We will divide this report into three parts: information and supply chain management related problems, operational problems, and strategic and design related problems.
Pitfalls 1 through 4 are related to information and supply chain management problems. Each site’s mission and objective is separate and therefore, often contradicts each other. This results in inefficiency of the supply chain, such as delaying the response time to the forward sites and customers. Most companies measure the average line item fill rate, which identifies the percentage of line item requests by customers shipped in time. However, this is not desirable due to four reasons. First, a customer usually requests multiple items. Second, measuring the overall order fill rate can be an appropriate performance measure, but it will not help the company identify which division is responsible for the slow-down. Third, the average line item fill rate cannot adequately measure the degree of order lateness. Finally, the conventional measure also neglects other critical service measures such as total order cycle time or total response time to an order, average back order, average lateness or earliness of orders relative to customer due dates and backorder profile.
