3. Ban on Honor Killing
If government or religious group can be active, honor killing will be eradicated. However, the government ignores that issue. In 2004, criminal prosecution bill for honor killing was submitted to the Jordan National Assembly, but it was dismissed by the conservative section's overwhelming opposition. A bill to ban on honor killing was dismissed in Pakistan, also.
On the other hand, Turkish Government have supported various educate movement and civil movement since 2000. Especially, they held meetings at the whole 81 areas to eradicate honor killing in 2000. In 2001, 6 documentaries are produced and supplied. As a result, in latest Turkey, they succeed in passing a bill thinking of honor killing and murder as the same. Such example gives a hopeful message that honor killing can be eradicated by government's active reformation.
4. Opposition to Honor Killing
(1) Anti-movements of Honor Killing
Each year, more than 5000 women around the world are murdered by their families in the name of so called honor due to the belief that the victim has brought dishonor on the family. Although honor killing is now gaining a lot of international attention as a problem of human rights violation, in the past, about 20years ago, it was being hidden and unreported by the public and the press. That is because it was considered very common and people thought their brutal actions were nothing wrong in the name of honor.
However, it was the reporter, Rana Husseini, at the Jordan Times who internationally publicized the problem of honor killing to the world for the first time. She has ever since mainly covered the cases of honor killing and soon it gained international attention. Moreover, both national and international human rights organization gathered to make an effort against honor killing as well. Ever since that time, even if honor killing is still carried out in Islamic society, there has been a tremendous effort to change the situation and in fact some progresses on both national and international level were made.
Unlike the past time, the growing number of movements against honor killing in Islamic countries is continuously occurring nowadays. And people in today have become no longer conservative and passive. Even though still minority people are making an action for a change and their results are still insufficient enough to make a change, it is a huge difference compared to the past.
1. Kurdish Women’s Rights Watch (KWRW)
The Kurdish Women’s Rights Watch (KWRW) is an organization aimed for supporting and promoting women’s rights in the Kurdish community. It also incorporates KWAHK, which stands for Kurdish women: Action against Honor Killing, that is an honor-based violence campaign within the organization, established in 2000 in London. KWAHK is a network of Kurdish and non-Kurdish activists, lawyers and academic researchers. It aims to raise national and international awareness about the issue of violence against women in the Kurdish communities, in particular honor killing.
Since its creation, KWAHK has registered several significant achievements. For instance, when the campaign was launched, KWAHK opened a public debate about honor killings in Britain. This was highly significant in that it brought over 500 members of the Kurdish community together to confront honor crimes. Since that, more people have become aware of it, have joined and have attended various international conferences to voice out their demands.
As a result, the group has gained a voice in the mainstream media, including national TV and radio, in Kurdistan and a number of European countries, to profile the situation faced by Kurdish women. Finally, they have seized the opportunities offered by the internet to release voices, showcase experience, and promote campaign.
2. Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organization (IKWRO)
Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organization (IKWRO), a secular organization with no political affiliations, was established in 2002 to support Kurdish and Iranian women. But it was expanded in 2006 to help all women and men needing help in the Arabic, Farsi, Kurdish, and Turkish languages. This group, in particular, deals extensively with family issues like forced marriage and honor based violence.
3. Pakistan
In Pakistan, women have been campaigning against honor crimes since the 1980s under the slogan “There is no honor in killing.” Instigated by Shirkat Gah Women’s Resource Centre, this movement has helped to put the spotlight on the issue. The media, politicians, and general public have since taken a strong public stance against this brutal practice. Women themselves have become more vocal in their refusal to be sidelined in the patriarchal decision-making process. This awareness raising is a key to undercutting the perception by society, especially local communities where honor killings are an indisputable tradition.
