Situation/Environment
Background
Lyft is a TNC (transportation network company), providing a platform and service for connecting the drivers and riders, including ride-sharing (multiple passengers with different destinations), in very efficient and convenient way. Although the business is itself is innovative and causing a significant change in the ecosystem of transportation, and communing pattern, Lyft is not the first to the market. Uber is. Since Uber “created” the market, and Lyft “entered” after, the former took much higher market share. It was approximately 75% for Uber, 20% for Lyft, and 5% for others, as of September 2017.
Competition
Being the first pioneer, and with substantial gain in the market, Uber accumulated enormous wealth that enabled restless expansion, entering many international markets across North, Central and South Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Pacific. It became a large global company, valued at $68 billion in 2015. Meanwhile, Lyft yet entered any international markets. And its value was $4 billion in the same period (one twenty seventh of Uber). Consequently, the biggest competitor of Lyft is Uber, and whatever strategy Lyft develops, either for domestic or for international market, it will always have to think about Uber carefully in its pursuit of higher market share and company valuation. In this context, both companies have been in direct competition in most of their services such as the following:

Provide user-friendly apps that make designating the destination, calling a ride, navigating the way to the destination, and making payments and tips very easy, simple and convenient
Have an affiliation with major food partners, allowing them entry into the food delivery business
Have almost the same pricing structures and rates
Offer multiple types of vehicles and ride types, including rides in large SUVs, sedans for 4 to 6 people, luxurious vehicles, and ride-sharing options
