Positive Feedback
Positive feedback tells children precisely what they did well. Instead ot saying "Great painting!" the thought-ful teacher says, "I noticed you wiped your brush on the edge of the paint container so the paint didnt drip." Positive feedback is best used to let children know when they have used a technique well or be-haved in a way that will give them turther success at the activity.
In order to respond specifically, teachers need to have a clear idea in their minds about what tech-niques and behaviors are appropriate and possibld for the child, and then they must carefully observe the child at work. Positive feedback enhances childrens feelings of self-confidence-it provides information on what they have done well, and it communicates to them that adults are personally interested enough in their art activites to observe specific things they have done.
Even though positive feedback seems more like a wordy description than praise, when it is delivered with the same facial expression and the same warm enthusiastic tone of voice that we would use for "Great job!" the child receives it as praise for being successful in a very specific way.
Positive feedback can take several forms, each ap-propriate in different situations. with practice, this kind of response can become a natural of talking to children about their art in daily interactions.
Descriptive Statements
A descriptive statement can be used to make children aware of their behavior and of how they solved a prob-lem, or to increase their understanding of art concepts. such descriptive statements show children that teach-ers value their individuality, because careful observa-tion is necessary to provide a meaningful descripton. Often the teacher may give each child at the same ac-tivity a different comment. These kinds of statements refer to how the child is working either with others or with the materials. They are the easiest statements to formulate and can serve as a good entrance into a conversation with children about their work. If children are working with a material, comment on how they manipulated it. For example:
