1. 의의 : 사람의 생존은 환경의 변화에 대한 적응능력에 크게 의존하고 있다. 대부분 운동의 순응과정으로써, 신체의 모든 기관계들이 모두 운동에 관여하지만, 현실적으로 운동을 주도하는 것은 골격계와 근육계의 공동작용이다. 골과 관절은 그 스스로는 움직일 수 없기 때문에 근육조직에 의존하지 않으면 안되는 것이다. 근육조직은 조직의 특성인 수축성, 신전성 및 탄력성에 의해 주도적으로 작용할 수 있다. 골격근은 체중의 거의 반을 차지하고 있으며 인체 내에는 골격근의 수가 약 200쌍에 이른다. 그러나 신체의 운동이나 전반적인 자세에 관여하고 있는 근육은 75쌍 정도이고 나머지는 안면 표정 및 연하작용과 발성 등의 역할을 한다. 사람의 형태를 유지하면서 근육을 부착시켜 운동을 할 수 있게 하는 골격계통은 체내의 모든 뼈, 연골 및 이들을 연결하는 관절을 포함한다. 즉 골격계통을 구성하는 조직은 뼈, 연골 및 이것들이 떨어져 나가지 않도록 연결하는 인대인 것이다. 이러한 골격 계통의 기능은 크고 간단하게 지지, 보호, 운동 및 조혈 등으로 나눌 수 있는데 뼈는 고층건물의 강철기둥 같이 신체를 지지하고, 견고한 뼈상자를 만들어 그 속에 연한 조직을 보호한다.
