본문내용: The characteristic of Gerrit Dou’s painting is its unusual clearness of vision and precision of manipulation. He even spent several days to paint a hand. Also, as you can feel from this figure, his color is always very fresh and transparent.
Two women are in a grocery shop. Like a typical mother these days, housewives in the past went grocery shop to buy ingredients of their dish. Carefully depicted matters attract viewers’ attention.

In 1660, the Stated of Holland selected this painting as one of the precious gifts to Charles∥on the occasion of the Restoration. Dou did a great work on contrasting the light and darkness. Dou used the warmness and brightness of light to praise the domestic virtues in this painting. We can also notice his attention through the serene atmosphere and the calm face of the baby.

After starting his family in the mid-1650s, Hooch started to focus on domestic scenes and family portraits. His work shows astute observation of the mundane details of everyday life.
Dutch women were praised at best for nursing infants. In this painting, mother seems as holly as Madonna and the act of nursing a baby at the breast itself is described as a holly behavior.
