If Google goes the same way as other companies like Yahoo or Microsoft had pursued, Google could be criticized as being naive immoralist. The reason is that Google could not sufficiently justify their act and be criticized for lack of their effort on changing the situation. But in this case, it is not just only Google who is facing this problem but many companies operating in China. It is a problem that is deeply related politically with Chinese government.
Opponents’ perspective, which includes human rights activists, is that Google is following the Friedman Doctrine. They asserted that Google decided to stay in China because of the opportunity they can get and to increase profits. They argued that Google could not fully guarantee and provide the rights to know, and also violate its principles. This is also related to the rights theories, which is that “human beings have fundamental rights and privileges that transcend national boundaries and cultures.” People who oppose Google’s decision also support righteous moralist concept because they think Google should follow the US’ standards even if they operate in China.
As a result negotiations between Chinese officials and Google over government censorship have reached to a difficult situation, and made Google to end up with shutting down its Chinese search engine.
