* GEMS (General Electronic Medical Systems 2002)

2002년 초, 밀워키에 기초한 GEMS(진단 촬영 장비 제조업자의 세계 리더)의 새로운 회장인 Joe Hogan이 어려운 도전에 직면한다. 2002년 GE는 세계에서 가장 큰 market capitalization을 가지고 있었다.(=4000억 $)

GE내에서 글로벌 수행의 리더로서 GEMS는 Immelt가 회장으로 있던 당시 수행됐던 GPC 철학을 토대로 굉장한 성과를 거둔다. GPC 철학(혹은 개념)이란, GE의 가장 효율적인 제조방식을 세계 곳곳에 표준화시키는 것에 집중하는 것이다.

① 그러나 중국에서의 기회가 GPC 모델과 서로 상충하고 있다. 즉, 중국시장에 진입하기 위한 “In China for China" 정책으로 변형시킬 것이냐? 아님, GPC 모델 그대로 갈 것인가의 문제가 있다.

② “개인 맞춤식 약품개발” 및 “개인별 맞춤식 진단 공학”이란 2가지 분야의 새로 발전하고 있는 기술적인 도전도 있다.

③ 궁극적으로 GE는 GEMS에게 매년 성장률 20%와 자본수익률 35%(현재 자본수익률 26%)를 요구하고 있다.
