천국과 지옥의 이혼, 즉 누군가가 천국과 지옥을 결혼시킨 적이 있다는 것이다. 천국과 지옥이 어떻게 결혼할 수 있을까? 아주 거리가 멀 것 같은 이 두 세계의 결합이지만 오늘날의 풍조 속에서는 그리 드문 일도 아니다. 현실 속에서 천국과 지옥은 계속 상상의 세계에 머무르고 있고, 그 상상의 세계들은 상상이라는 점에서 일정한 공통점을 가진다. 그렇기 때문에 현대인의 감각에서는 천국이나 지옥이나 별 차이가 없다. 이혼을 이해하기 위해서는 먼저 결혼을 이해해야 할 것 같다. 사람들은 왜 천국과 지옥을 끊임없이 결혼 시키려고 하는 것일까? 루이스는 이에 대해 이렇게 말한다. "이런 시도는 현실에서 반드시 흑 아니면 백이 되는 경우는 절대 없다는 믿음에서 나온 것이다. 숙련된 기술과 참을성과 충분한 시간만 있으면 양자를 다 포용할 수 있는 길을 언제든 찾아낼 수 있다는 믿음, 갖고 싶은 것을 철저하고 단호하게 거부할 필요 없이 그저 악을 약간만 발전시키고 조정하고 다듬기만 하면 선으로 바꿀 수 있다는 믿음 말이다. 그러나 이런 믿음은 파국으로 치닫는 실수라고 나는 생각한다." 다시 말해서 C.S 루이스는 천국과 지옥을 동전의 양면으로 보고 있는 것이다.
『천국과 지옥의 이혼』은 판타지 소설이다. 한 사람이 버스를 타고 어느 곳에 이르러 겪게 되는 이야기다. 그 곳에서 보고 들은 이야기다. 버스가 출발한 곳과 도착한 곳, 어느 곳이 천국이고 어느 곳이 지옥인가? 나는 죽은 건가? 아니면 살아있는 건가? 이야기는 때와 장소에 대한 명확한 설명 없이 이어진다. 하지만 그 와중에 흑과 백에 대한 명확한 판가름을 한다. 선은 오직 하나, 하나님뿐! 그 밖의 모든 것은 하나님을 바라보고 있을 때는 선하고, 등을 돌리고 있을 때는 악하다는 것이다. 인간이라면 누구나 자기애를 가지고 있다. 특별히 그것이 강하면 자기집착이 되어 죄의 모습을 가진다고 루이스는 말한다. 이 곳을 방황하는 유령들의 모습은 자기 아집을 결코 벗어나지 못하는 우리들의 모습과 비슷하다.
