The first Alteration, the first Grudging, of the Sickness.
이 글을 시작하면서 던은 건강 상태의 변화를 언급한다( I was well, and am ill). 건강했다가 갑자기 병이 들었을 때의 혼란스러움에 대해 말하면서 병은 부지불식간에 갑자기 찾아와 우리를 파괴시킨다고 한다. 이러한 인간의 처지가 죄를 짓고 필멸의 존재가 되고 나서부터이며 병으로 고통받는 인간의 나약함에 대해 자세히 설명한다. 병이 오기도 전에 지레 겁을 먹고 걱정하느라 더 큰 고통을 받으며 죽음 앞에 힘없는 인간의 모습을 애석해한다.
O multiplied misery! we die, and cannot enjoy death, because we die in this torment of sickness; we are tormented with sickness, and cannot stay till the torment come, but pre-apprehensions and presages, prophecy those torments, which induce that death before either come.
아, 엎친 데 덮친 격으로 온 고난이여! 우리는 죽고 죽음을 즐기지 못하니, 이것은 우리가 병으로 고통을 겪으며 죽기 때문이리라; 병이 우리를 괴롭혀 고통이 올 때까지 참지 못하기에, 미리 불안해하고 미리 조짐을 느끼며 오기도 전에 죽음으로 이어질 그 고통을 예견하네.
인간의 붕괴는 병의 첫 변화부터 잉태되어 병으로 진행되고 결국 죽음을 낳으며 죽음은 이미 첫 변화에서부터 시작된다고 주장하면서 던은 그의 확장된 상상력을 이용해 인간의 한계를 개탄한다.
Is this the honour which man hath by being a little world, that he hath these earthquakes in himself, sudden shakings; these lightnings, sudden flashes; these thunders, sudden noises; these eclipses, sudden offuscations and darkening of his senses; these blazing stars, sudden fiery exhalations; these rivers of blood, sudden red waters?
이것이 작은 우주와도 같은 인간의 영예인 것인가? 지진이 난 것처럼 흔들리는 것은 갑작스러운 오한이고, 번개는 갑작스런 열병이고, 천둥은 갑작스런 재채기이고, 또 일식이나 월식은 갑작스러운 혼란과 멀어버린 감각이고, 반짝이는 별들은 갑작스런 발열이고, 피의 강물들은 갑자기 터진 혈뇨(또는 적수)인가?
이어서 자신의 죽음을 두려워하는 인간의 어찌할수 없는 딜레마에 대해 자세히 짚어가면서 던은 이 복잡하게 얽힌 파멸과 인간의 운명을 안타까워한다(O perplexed discomposition, O riddling distemper, O miserable condition of man!)

그 전의 장과 동일하게 하나님을 부르며 시작하는 9장 논의 부분은 자만하는 자들에게 합당한 분노와 신앙적 증오를 허락해달라고 말하면서 시작하고 있다. 역대(기)와 이사야 서에서 성경적 부분을 빌어와 얘기하는 던의 중심 단어는 “협의”이다. 그는 이 단어를 이용해 역대기에서 알폰수스의 말을 예로 들고 이사야의 예도 든다. 이러한 성경적 배경을 뒷받침할 내용으로 사용하며 그는 이 단어 하나만으로 자신의 생각을 확장시켜 나간다.
In the making of Man there was a consultation; Let us make man.(.....)for all thyexternall workes, are the workes of the whole Trinity, and their hand is to every action. How much more must Iapprehend, that al you blessed, and glorious persons of the Trinitie are in consultation now, what you wil do with this infirm body, with this leprous Soule, that attends, guiltily, but yet comfortably, your determination upon it. I offer not to counsell them, who meet in consultation for my body now, but I open my infirmities, I anatomise my body to them.
병든 자신을 두고 신이 어떻게 할 것인지 협의하고 있는 상황으로 묘사하면서 던은 자신이 직접 자신의 병에 대해 말하고 정황을 밝히려 한다. 병이 차도를 보이지 않는 당시의 상황을 마치 어떠한 결정을 내리기 전의 협의 과정으로 인식하고 있으며 또한 자신의 병과 육체적 상태에 대해 신과 삼위일체에서 고하는 부분은 마치 논리적인 설명으로 변호하고 있는 느낌을 받을 수 있다. 신, 삼위일체와 던 자신과의 관계를 공적, 법적이며 사무적이라고도 할 수 있는 관계(통보를 받는 관계)로 구분지으면서 그는 아직 자신에 대한 부분이 협의 중에 있는 것이라면 아직 유죄판결을 받지 않은 것이라고 한다. 그리고 논의를 마무리지으면서 협의가 끝나고 어떤 판결이 나든 그것은 하나님의 의도이니 겸허히 받아들이겠다는 논조로 글을 끝맺고 있지만 동시에 유죄판결을 받지 않았으면 하는 개인적 소망이 엿보이기도 한다.
