I. Introduction
1. The significance of the Ricardian Model
The modern economic trade theory was originated from the advocator of ‘absolute advantage’, Adam Smith. According to the theory of ‘absolute advantage’, each country specializes in the product of its absolute advantage in productivity. The theory of ‘absolute advantage’ was accepted as intuitively correct during that time.
However, Ricardo’s theory of ‘comparative advantage’ eventually replaced the theory of ‘absolute advantage’. According to the theory of comparative advantage, countries can export even when they do not have an absolute advantage. When each country exports the product in which it has a comparative advantage, all the countries engaging in trade would experience an increase in welfare.
The theory of ‘comparative advantage’ was a revolutionary idea at that time, and even today, its logic is used to support and promote global free trade.
