피자헛은 브라질에 특별한 전략을 세우지 않고, 브라질 상파울루에 매장을 개업하여 브라질에 맞는 계획을 세우기 위해 사무실을 세웠다. 브라질은 외채와 인플레이션, 환율정책에 역점을 두어 환율의 변화로 피자헛에 영양을 미쳤고, 이를 극복하기 위해 피자헛은 여러 전략을 시도하였다.

피자헛과 브라질 현실에 대해 공부하면서 브라질의 장점, 단점과 피자헛이 브라질에 진출한 과정에 대해 알아볼 수 있었다.
피자헛의 1990년 중반에 10년 계획은 브라질을 세계안의 2번째 혹은 3번째로 가장 큰 시장으로 만드는 것이다. 브라질은 매우 큰 시장크기를 갖고 있으며, 2000년 브라질은 세계에서 GDP가 9번째인 나라, 1인당 소득은 57번째이며, 국토의 크기가 세계에서 7번째로 큰 나라이다. 또한 세계에서 가장 큰 2개인 도시인 상파울루와 리우데자네이루를 가진 매우 도시화된 국가로 지역적으로 특별한 장점을 가지고 있었다. 이러한 장점이 있는 반면에 내국산업을 보호하는 경제정책, 사업 확장을 위해 신용보조금을 지급하고, 인플레이션 증가로 이를 극복하기 위해 헤알정책을 시행하였으나, 1997년 아시아 경제위기로 현실의 불안정해졌다. 게다가 이자율 상승으로 늘어난 부채를 연방정부가 주의 부채를 삭감하려고 했으나 Minas Gerais의 주지사인 Itomar Franco가 부채 지불유예 선언을 하면서 현실의 가치는 급격히 하락하는 단점을 보였다.
피자헛은 1988년 브라질에 처음 진출하였고, corporate franchises 방식을 통해 확장하였다. 인플레이션 환경안에서 운영하기위해 재정적 지원과 경영경험을 가진 사람을 원해 피자헛에게 감각을 키워주었다. 그러나 프랜차이즈를 가진 사람은 많은 권세를 부려서 피자헛의 브라질 전략수단을 방해하였다. 그리하여 피자헛은 프랜차이즈 망을 유지하기 위해 사업이 성장하는 조건으로 프랜차이즈를 계약하여 치즈생산의 공급자가 되었으며 상대적으로 체인점과 치즈생산의 질 저하로 이어져 본사가 프랜차이즈를 소유할 필요가 있다고 결정하였다. 피자헛이 개업한지 6개월 동안 몇몇 문제가 발생했다. ①경영문화, ②매장의 직원들이 피자헛의 경영진이 생각하는 것보다 많아 처음 협상을 할 때 직원과 비용을 숨긴 것, ③높은 인플레이션이다.
1994년 6월에 정부는 헤알정책을 세웠고 인플레이션은 점점 낮아지기 시작하여 고정환율제를 채택하였다. 새로운 통화정책과 인플레이션이 늦춰지던 때 가게는 큰 급료파동이 일어났고, 현금과 운송에 있어서 가게운영과 공급의 지불지연으로 인하여, 부풀려진 판매수입은 공급에 대한 지불을 위해 승낙했다. 이에 판매할 곳을 모았고 상가 임대차 계약을 했다. 그 후 떨어진 인플레는 상가임대계약의 지불이 30~45% 오른 것 등 그동안 높은 인플레이션에서 부풀려져 있던 매출이 1994년 12월~1995년 12월 사이에 50%나 떨어졌다. 이를 극복하기 위해서 피자헛은 판매촉진을 위해 저렴한 가격을 위한 25%의 가격인하를 하였고, 그리고 맥도널드의 도움을 받아 캠페인을 했으나, 실패하여 브랜드 이미지를 버리고 삼바를 중심으로 현지화 전략을 수립하게 된다.

Over the next eight years, however, Pizza Hut came under increasing pressure in Brazil and was trying to decide if it should continue to operate there or pull out and invest in other countries.
