∎ 단어는 언어 지식의 중요한 부분, 그러나 단어를 안다고 언어를 아는 것이 아니다.
∎ 단어를 안다는 것은 일련의 음의 연속이 특정 의미와 관련됨을 아는 것이다.
[예; Thecallsatonthemat → The, cat, sat, on, the, mat]
∎ 똑같은 음의 연속(Lois Bidder-lowest bidder)이 달리 해석될 수 있는 이유는 음과 의미의 관계가 자의적 결합이라는 사실을 보여주는 것이다.
[예; Un petit d’un petit는 :a little one of a little one’을 의미, 그러나 그 음은 마치 영어로 Humpty Dumpty처럼 들린다.]
∎ 단어를 아는 것은 음(발음)과 의미를 아는 것, 음과 의미의 관계는 자의적이기 때문에 동음이의어와 이음동의어가 가능하다.
∎ 단어는 음-의미 단위, 단어는 발음을 결정해주는 음운 표기와 의미와 함께 열거되어 있어야 한다. 즉 정서법도 포함되어 있다.
∎ 머리사전은 단어의 문법범주(품사)도 명시한다.
