Activated sludge is a term used both to refer to a widely utilized wastewater treatment process, and to the solid com-pounds which result from that process.
The activated sludge technique is one of the most commonly used methods for handling human waste in municipal settings around the world, and it can also be employed in the treatment of industrial wastewater.
The goal is to remove as much solid organic material from the wastewater as possible, to facilitate further stages in the water treatment.
포기조에서는 하수 중에 포함된 유기물질을 처리한다.
포기조에는 많은 양의 공기를 공급하여 미생물(박테리아)을 증식시킨다.
공기 중의 산소는 호기성 미생물을 빠르게 성장시키고, 증식된 미생물들은 하수에 있는 주 오염원인 유기물질을 산화, 분해시킨다.
하수중의 산소와 유기물질이 많이 함유되어 있을수록, 미생물은 번식을 잘하며 증식된 미생물은 유기물질을 분해시키고, 그 찌거기와 함께 가라앉게 된다.
침전된 미생물 덩어리와 산화, 분해, 흡착된 덩어리들의 일부는 포기조로 이송되어, 새로이 들어온 유기물질들을 산화, 분해하는데 이용되고 나머지(잉여오니)는 슬러지 처리공정으로 보내져 처리되게 된다. 각 가정에서 버리는 유해화합물, 세제 등은 미생물의 성장에 중요한 영향을 미쳐, 하수처리에 지장을 가져오게 된다.
