Let’s start with the environmental situation in Philippines. I focused on Air Pollution only which consists of lots of sources. For example PM, SO2, NO2, CO and VOC as see in the table above.
Those interfere directly with oxygen uptake, causing poisoning at very high concentrations at low levels, it impacts the nervous system and causes direct damage to lung tissue and in high concentrations can cause breathing, eye, and nose irritation. It also contributes to respiratory and heart ailments. One of the main sources attributing to air pollution is Automobile which is highly serious. So I’m going to concentrate on air pollution from automobile. We could understand with those pictures below that Philippines exposes people to high levels of air pollution.

2-2. The Reasons of Air Pollution
2-2-1. Urbanization
<Figure.1 Urbanization increase between 1990 and 2005 and forecast for 2050>

The First reason I found is the urbanization throughout the Philippines.
The Philippines is rapidly urbanizing which reflects INCREASING GDP and by 2050 84% of people will be living in cities, compared to 49% in 1990. Bigger cities put more pressure on available resources, including clean air.
The Philippines, except for Singapore, is the most urbanized country in Southeast Asia, the seventh most urbanized country in all Asia and the country with the sixth highest urbanization rate in Asia. Which means urbanization is main factor contributing to air pollution.
Those pictures below are the latest pictures in manila which show the advancement of itself.

2-2-2. Economic Growth and Vehicle Growth
As the GDP of Philippines continues to rise, energy consumption is also increasing. Energy consumption increased from 0.731 quadrillion BTU in 1990 to 1.336 quadrillion BTU in 2005.
Energy consumption and economic growth are related each other and those can be assumed with data of air pollution.
