| This essay evaluates the political impacts of the multimember district systems on the 2010 Local elections. As a result, this study, first, finds that the multimember district systems did not contribute to mitigate the regionalism in the 2006 Local elections, nor did in the 2010 elections. This study argues that researchers should disentangle the elusive effects of independents in understanding the true impacts of the multimember district systems in 2010. Second, the multimember district systems attribute to the electoral successes of the ideology-oriented parties including the Democratic Labor Party in Korea. Third, the multimember district systems clearly help women to enter into the legislative arena in Korea. |
