This research tries to focus on changing process of a dominant discourse in order to investigate changing aspects of North Korean system. In general, change of a dominant discourse links with formation of a counter- discourse. In other words, formation of a counter-discourse means a break of the existing dominant discourse, and also its characteristics helps to estimate aspects of social change.
It is a private discourse as a counter-discourse, though there are many other kinds of counter-discourses, that this research tries to examine. The public sphere in North Korea is considerably large, because it seeks strong social integration. In North Korea, various control systems has been established not only in political area but also in everyday life, so that the private area restricted seriously. The multilevel reviews of life (saenghwal chonghwa) held in the party organization, workplace and neighborhood unit (inminban) is one representative example showing little space of private life. Reduction of the private area also means limitation of private discourse. In such condition, private discourse formation itself becomes a foundation to bring a crack of existing dominant discourse and shape a new counter-discourse.
This research aims to examine a possibility to form private discourse as a part of changing prospect in North Korean system. Thus, it is necessary to look into characteristics of discourse structure in socialist system so as to make conformity of discussion related to private discourse formation in North Korea. In particular, it focuses on the relational interaction between the public discourse and the private discourse. It examines about an existing form of the private discourse in a society which the public discourse is dominant, a structure of specialization between the public and private discourse, and a path and form to shape the private discourse in socialist system in transition that the public discourse is losing its dominant status.
