The feed grain is milled into a powder-like fineness to
allow water access to all the starch inside each grain.
Steeping, grinding, and germ separation are techniques
that can be used to fully convert corn grain into pure
starch.
The slurry temperature is to between 80 and 100 degrees centigrade to hydrolyze the starch into solution.
Once crops have been harvested, the cellulosic parts
must be removed and the starches collected.
In the case of corn, this entails separating the leaves,
stalk, and cob so that only the grains remain.
The corn grains will be processed into glucose, which will ferment with the help of yeast and amylase, a specified enzyme for digesting carbohydrates (sugars) . Ethanol is the result of the fermentaton.
Distillation is required to bring the ethanol up to
a 95% concentration.
