It was early in the morning in November 1994. It must have been cold, because I remember white steam of breath coming out of Mom`s pale-blue lips. Holding my small, frozen hand, Mom was leading me to an elementary school it was to be the first day of my school life. Walking on a crowded street filled with children, however, I was soon becoming more and more annoyed by the giggling sound coming from behind, obviously aimed at me. When I saw crowds of kids walking by my side, I quickly shook off free from Mom`s hand. I felt sorry for my mom, but I didn`t want to be seen by my potential classmates as a baby who still clung to her mommy. Mom seemed surprised at my sudden behavior, but I could not find any look of disappointment on her face. Instead, she walked as if nothing had happened. She had always been a considerate mother for me, and I think she knew but pretended not to that I was being self-conscious about the mocking words from bigger children. The way to the school was in total disorder. Both its sides were packed with various shops, and the road was unpaved. |
