Through nearly a 5,000-year-old history, Koreans have cherished the cultivation of moral character as a focal point of human life. Traditionally, Koreans have considered themselves as the recipient of bright light from the East as the foundation of life. For them, the heaven was regarded as the foundation of moral order and human conscience. This strong belief in the East and heaven led to ethical consciousness based on the idea that "Our heaven knows us completely" or "Heaven is the author of the virtue that is in us." This, in turn, led to a strong sense of moral shame before the heaven and moral obligation to the heaven. Even in the modern scientific community, many Koreans become frightened of heaven's vengeance when they do unjust acts (Korea Ethics Studies Association, 1993). 거의 5천 년의 오래된 역사 속에서, 한국은 인간 삶의 핵심 부분으로서 도덕성의 배양을 중요하게 생각해왔다. 전통적으로 한국인은, 스스로를 삶의 근원만큼이나 동양의 밝은 빛의 수혜자로 여기며 살았다. 한국인에게, 하늘은 도덕적 질서와 양심의 근간으로 간주되었다. 이 동쪽 하늘에 대한 강한 믿음은 “하늘이 우리를 온전히 안다”, “하늘은 우리 안에 있는 미덕의 근원이다”와 같은 사상에 근간을 둔 윤리 의식으로 이어졌다. 이는 바꿔 말하면, 하늘 앞에서 도덕적 수치심이라는 강한 감정과 하늘을 향한 도덕적 의무로 인도하였던 것이다. 현대 과학 사회에 이르러서도, 많은 한국인들은 그들이 부당한 행동을 할 때 하늘의 복수를 두려워한다(한국 윤리 연구 협회, 1993)
