As bird damage to fruit and horticultural crops is of great concern for many years, many researches are faced with increasing social and economical issues that further restrict the techniques that can be used to control hazard bird impacts. However, the management of pest birds is one of the most challenging tasks. Here, we investigated the current situations of pear damage by the Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica), and examined the fruit damage associated with sugar contents and varieties of the pears, and the locations of sitting site on the branch of the trees. We selected 290 pears (95 as control groups and 195 as experimental groups) from 52 pear trees consisting of five varieties. We observed the pear damage every second week from 30 July to 29 September 2013 at Practical Agricultural Training Institute of Chonnam National University, located in Naju city, Jeollanamdo. Sugar contents increased as dates increased, but the ratio of the number of damaged to undamaged pears was decreased. Even if the average sugar contents per a variety increased, the damage ratio for the variety was decreased. The pear damage increased with increasing direct distance between the pears and the branch of the trees. The average distance of the damaged pears was 8.5 cm while undamaged pears was 5.8 cm. From these results, we suggested the possible methods to reduce the pear damage by the Black-billed Magpies.
